We all know of the tales of glory. Stories about the greatest wolves among us, who killed a pack of black spiral dancers, defended a whole city all by themselves or who rescued a pair of cubs from the claws of certain doom. Such tales, or even greater ones like those about Sean O’Neill, should not be forgotten. And of course they are not. They are told over and over during many gatherings all over the world. But there are also tales of the wise, stories of the mystique, with a message we might not always fully understand. This is such a tale, a story of death, yet not of mourning. A story where a wise man both lost and gained a great name.

I’ve met Kafir ‘Eén Oog’ on the day he would die. His body was a broken body. He’d lost his arm and could hardly see. Yet he’d kept up his head and his good spirit and honoured the Bluepelt Sept with a final visit. He had come to us with gifts, tales, and a final request. He asked for some of us to guide him through his final rite, the rite of the Winter Wolf.

Some say he had pushed on too far and Death was inevitable. More foul tongues might even whisper that he had asked for it, he should have died on his final quest and now, there was no way out. To all of you who ask these questions, to those who entertain these thoughts, I ask you this: when Death comes, will you cut out you heart? When you have nothing to gain, will you share your darkest secrets? When all you have to do is die, will you give away your name? Because that is what Kafir did! Thanks to him we now know how the foul Spiral den at Pernis was created many years ago. He has discovered where their Hive is weakest, and he has given his life to obtain this information. It is now in the mind of our great Alpha, the General, and it will surely lead him to glory. But this tale is not about that kind of glory.

With this tale we honour Kafir. His wise words and deeds brought hope to the Bluepelt Sept and it’s wolves. His Garou name ‘Eén Oog’ will live on with Ilea, as was his dying wish. May she share her wisdom in ways to reflect his bright mind. We will remember Kafir as ‘Out of the Box’, as our Alpha has named him properly.

I want to thank the Bluepelt Sept, for sharing their final words and wishes with ‘Out of the Box’. I want to thank those who were present during his final rite for sharing this most intimate moment. I want to thank our Alpha for taking his words to heart and leading us out of despair. Above all, I want to thank ‘Out of the Box’ for listening to his final song.
